Flagstone Patio

One of the things I loved putting in my backyard was a flagstone patio. At about 6x12 feet, it is not large but charming nonetheless. I decided to go with a dry installation, which was fairly inexpensive and much easier than a concrete installation. Basically, while I ordered granite for the backyard beach, I made sure to get enough to put this in too. As it turns out, 3 tons was more than enough for both projects. Here's a look at it not long after I put it in:

Installation did not take long at all, with help from my sister and a little patience. The hardest part, which my sister can attest to I'm sure, was making sure the flagstone was level. If it is not level you'll no right away - it pops out of the granite like a see-saw when you step on the edge. After that was over, it was time to fill the gaps with moss - because moss is awesome - and there's tons of shade in my backyard. Unfortunately, the first year I did not have nearly enough moss, but I have a spot in my yard where I can harvest more every year or so if I'm careful not to deplete it.

Since the initial install, I have managed to get all the moss needed to fill in the cracks. I also added some creeping plants between the rocks - some blue star creeper and some white star creeper. I think it's mostly complete now, it just needs a little table and chairs to seal the deal. =)
